East Lansing Food Co-op started in 1976 as a buying club for local people who wanted healthy and organic food. Soon after, it opened a cooperatively owned grocery storefront in East Lansing. Over the years, it has expanded into a store that is owned by over 3,500 people in our community.
Wild Oats Market is a cooperative. In many ways, we are like any other business. Like all businesses, we must make a profit to stay viable. We must provide our member-owners and customers with the products and services they want if we are to retain their support. But in many important ways, we are different from businesses that are owned by private investors or through publicly traded shares.
Opened April 30, 2008, our co-op was built into a bowl-shaped site carved from the granite hillside between 1900-1934. Stone from this hill was used to build King St. and Routes 5 & 10. The quarry operations left the site with a flat plateau surrounded by granite cliffs rising on three sides. The cliff acts as a natural barrier between the cooperative store operations and surrounding residential areas. It also provides a beautiful setting for our community food store.

We are a community market, cooperatively owned by approximately 1,100 of our friends and neighbors. We offer a unique atmosphere, friendly environment and excellent customer service.

People's Food Co-op was born from a buying club founded in 1973. Initially operating from a basement of a house, the club evolved into a small store. In the late 70s the co-op moved into a bigger location on La Crosse's Southside. Sales continued to grow steadily, and with the growth came a number of expansions and relocations. The co-op moved into its current downtown location in 1993 and at the time added a deli, bakery, fresh meats, and beer and wine department.
Welcome to the Co-op! We are a full service grocery store, offering local, whole and organic foods, with a passion for sharing good food with everyone.
