Weavers Way Co-op - Mt. Airy

Our newly renovated Mt. Airy store offers a fresh new look and all the great local, natural, and organic food we have been known for since 1973. Plus, we have added one of the largest bulk departments in the region: hundreds of items, from nuts, grains, flours and sugars to olive oil, honey and liquid detergent, not to mention plenty of wholesome snacks. Shoppers can bring their own reusable containers to stock up on their favorite products — at considerable savings too.

Weavers Way Co-op's Mt. Airy store is still at the intersection of Greene Street and Carpenter Lane in West Mt. Airy, our home for 40 years. We started out just a few doors down, but moved to 559 Carpenter Lane shortly after, and we have been there ever since, expanding to include 557, as well. Our offices and community meeting space are at 555 Carpenter Lane, right next door.

Mission: We bridge the gap between local producers and the people of Portland. We fill the shelves of our neighborhood grocery stores with local, fresh foods and all the flavors of each season so you can eat colorfully and live vibrantly.
Our History:
In 1972 a group of neighbors in Northwest Portland joined together to sell groceries out of a little store on 23rd Avenue. Their mission was to provide their community with a place to buy good quality groceries that couldn’t be found in regular supermarkets.
Even though this first grocery store was small, the impact of people coming together to provide for themselves and their community was immense. Over the years our store has moved a few times, is now owned by over 10,000 people and has two locations but are still committed to providing the finest quality wholesome foods for our community.

Our Hillsborough store is located at the south end of a quaint-yet-dynamic downtown. History buffs will enjoy walking past colonial buildings, sitting in the garden at the Visitor’s Center, and stopping to read approximately two dozen historic markers around town. Access the Riverwalk along the Eno just behind our store. We’re just a few miles from the interstates, and there is plenty of free parking in the public deck behind our building.

Our Southern Village store is a hub in the small downtown of Southern Village, a “new urban” neighborhood located a few miles south of the UNC campus in Chapel Hill. The main Market Street is within walking distance of the neighborhood and includes restaurants, shops, services, and The Lumina movie theater. The village green hosts outdoor movies and concerts in the warm season. Free parking is available in the lot in front of our store and on side streets.

Our Carrboro store is located in the heart of a vibrant, walkable downtown. Originally established as the location of the train depot that served the university, Carrboro became a mill town before emerging as a bastion of local pride and thriving local businesses. In fact, our building is adjacent to the original mill, which was renovated into the Carr Mill Mall. From our shady front lawn, you can walk to the Farmer’s Market, concert venues, art galleries, and dozens of shops and restaurants. If you plan to walk around, public parking is available on West Weaver and South Greensboro Streets.

People's Food Co-op is community owned. That means that we have a special understanding of how we must nourish and respect not only our shoppers, but our community and our environment as well. It is that "triple bottom line" that drives all that we do at PFC. Every decision we make must pay dividends to our stakeholders financially, socially, and environmentally.

Natural Harvest Food Co-op started as a buying club about three years before the storefront opened. The first buying club meeting was held in June 1976. This group started with just a few families and individuals who came together because they wanted to buy nutritious whole foods at more reasonable prices than were available locally.
